Lutho’s Internship Experience: Learning, Resilience, and Finding Purpose in the Creative Industry
Entering the creative industry as a young graduate can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Like many young South Africans, I stepped into my internship with hope, ambition, and a clear desire to gain experience, but also with uncertainty about what the future would look like. My internship journey at iKasi Creative has been one of learning, self-discovery, and resilience, offering me a clearer understanding of both the opportunities and realities within the creative sector.
Stepping into the Real World of Media
From the outset, this internship has challenged me to grow beyond theory and step into practice. Having studied Public Relations and Communication, I understood concepts such as storytelling, audience engagement, and brand positioning, but applying these ideas in a real working environment required adaptability and confidence. At iKasi Creative, I have been exposed to hands-on tasks ranging from content creation and digital communication to internal coordination and collaborative planning. Each responsibility, no matter how small, has contributed to building my professional discipline, confidence, and work ethic.
One of the most valuable aspects of my internship experience has been learning how creativity can be used as a tool for social impact. iKasi Creative operates at the intersection of media, community, and youth development. This has reshaped how I view creative work, not just as a means of self-expression, but to empower communities, amplify unheard voices, and create access to opportunity. Being part of projects that center youth stories has reinforced the importance of authenticity, responsibility, and purpose in the work we produce.
