What was the Skills and Innovation Challenge Competition?

The world is changing at an alarmingly fast rate. Technology is the one constant thing that will always reshape our realities. However, one thing is for sure, the skills that are required for the future will differ from those required in the past. For this reason, it is important to train our youth so that they are skilled enough to become employable.

How can we assist those in rural areas? How can we, as iKasi Creative, equip them with the necessary skills for them to successfully secure a job?  This is where the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have come together to assist in the improving and enhancing of digital skills for the youth and assist them in becoming assets in our community.

In addition to the above, the Skills Challenge Innovation Call is an effort where all partners collaborated in order to boost employability through digital skills for the youth by assisting with funding of capital as well as strengthening the economy.

How did the Challenge take place?

Participants needed to forward a proposal detailing their design and learning initiatives including the 3 main points below:

  1. Training the trainers
  2. Training rollout to the youth
  3. Digital skills development

After the proposals were handed in and checked, all participants needed to do an 8-minute pitch wherein the idea on how to “Boost youth employability through digital skills” was outlined. This competition brought together many NGOs and NPOs, training centers and official bodies to assist training and learning centers who work within this exciting industry.

Guess who won?

The answer might seem obvious, because it is.  We are excited to announce that iKasi Creative has won first prize! The first prize being 40 000 USD in funding, access to the 6-month Skills Innovation Lab which provides access to face-to-face and virtual mentoring, exposure and networking opportunities, training and capacity building. We are super proud of our Managing Director, Lamise Inglis for winning this momentous award on behalf of iKasi Creative.

Overall, the pitch was a success and iKasi Creative looks forward to future innovation calls that will assist in nurturing young talents in the film, television and media industry.
